UPASS PROGRAM

The UPASS (Universal Bus Pass) gives College of the Rockies students access to all City of Cranbrook bus routes as well as an on-demand shuttle service for students taking evening classes.  The on-demand shuttle service runs Monday to Friday beginning at 7:00pm with the last bus leaving at 9:15pm.  The shuttle takes students directly to their home anywhere within the city limits.

The UPASS also includes free access to public swim times at Western Financial Place in Cranbrook.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Starting in September 2024, the UPASS will shift from a sticker to using the new BC Transit Umo app or Umo card.  Select the method you prefer before activating because it is more difficult to change once the code is activated.

  • Only one form of the UPASS (Umo app or Umo card) can be active at a time.  Best to select which you want before starting.

  • To change between the card and the app, you will need to contact Umo Customer Service to reassign the code from the app to the card.

Who is eligible?

All students who are taking full time classes at College of the Rockies and are members of the College of the Rockies Students' Association, are automatically assessed the UPASS fee for each semester.   This is a mandatory program that provides unlimited access to public transit in Cranbrook for eligible College of the Rockies students.  The program was established in 2006 by referendum of students to provide a low-cost transportation option for students, reduce traffic and pollution and to ease the parking demands at the College and surrounding areas.

Who is automatically excluded from Assessment of the UPASS?

  • Distance students not taking on campus credit classes

  • Students at College of the Rockies campuses other than the Cranbrook campus

  • Part time students who are paying COTR Students' Association fees

  • Students who do not pay the COTR Students' Association fee

Can I Opt-Out of the UPASS?

College of the Rockies Students' Association and BC Transit have agreed to allow students to opt out of the UPASS only if they meet one of the following two criteria:

  1. Student has a physical disability that precludes travel by regular Cranbrook Transit fixed route or the handyDart services.

  2. Students who already hold a CNIB Pass or the annual BC Bus Pass.

Only the 2 reasons listed above are eligible to request an opt out.  Any other reason does not qualify for opt out.

How do I Opt-Out?

Please complete the UPASS Opt-Out form and submit to the Students' Association by email (studentsassociation@cotr.bc.ca) no later than 30 days from the start of the semester.
